If you’ve played football or ran track at GBHS, or have been assigned in-school suspension, then you definitely know who this is. Coach Manwarren is the Defensive Coordinator for the football team and is in charge of the in-school suspension program. His job is to support the school wide vision of creating and sustaining a positive and safe learning environment for students. He explained that in order to create a successful program for in-school suspension, he tries to help the students academically and with social needs.

When asked about connecting with students, Coach Manwarren said, “It is very important to establish positive relationships with students. I want students to know that when they come to in-school suspension there are certain expectations that I have for them. I also want them to know that I care about them and want to see them become successful. I will often times have conversations with students to understand their situation and help them make better choices in the future.”

The daily routine for in-school suspension is for students to work primarily by themselves, but if a student doesn’t understand his/her work then Coach Manwarren will offer help in any way he can provide. It’s pretty obvious that this is where you go when you’re in trouble and that not all the students are going to be rays of sunshine. So what happens if they refuse to listen to instructions?

Coach Manwarren responded, “If a student is not ready to be accountable and take responsibility for the consequences of their actions there are additional consequences for violating school and classroom rules that could result in additional disciplinary actions.”

In-school suspension is not a place teachers and administrators want to see students… the goal is that all  students at Great Bend High School get the best education and become successful when they graduate.
