At Great Bend High School, wrestling coach, Nathan Broeckelman holds practice after school from 3:30pm to 5:30pm to make sure that everyone is improving their techniques and getting prepared for their meets.

Broeckelman expects this season to go like all seasons, to have its ups and downs and to make sure that everyone is healthy.  In this years season, there’s a total of 11 senior students in wrestling, with 7 senior boys and 4 senior girls.

“I think my mindset has gotten a lot better since I first started wrestling which is what I struggled with the most.” Senior wrestler Caitlyn White said.

Broeckelman teaches Consumer Math and Algebra Foundations 1 as well as coach the wrestling team. He has been a wresting coach here at Great Bend High School for 6 years. Before he became a teacher and coach at GBHS, he coached in Tribune, Kansas and at Manhattan HS.

“The wrestlers are off to a slow start but we look to change that tomorrow vs Dodge City.” said Coach Broeckelman,  “Our girls are wrestling well, but we need to improve on our performance on the boys side.”

Broeckelman’s goal for this year’s season is that they become WAC champions and they get state trophies for both the girls and boys wrestling team. To accomplish their goal they are going to keep working hard during practice and keep pushing to be their best so they can prepare for the WAC tournament.

Both the girls and boys wrestling team had their first meet of the season yesterday from 5-7pm where the girls scored 54-18 and the boys scored 25-47.

Since they had their first meet they can look back on that to help them improve and becoming more prepared for any future meets.

“I’m really happy with how my first match went, but there’s always room to improve.” said White.
