A year ago today, I was sitting in this gymnasium “honoring” past and present members of the Armed Services. I say “honoring” because of the lack of attention I payed. I wanted nothing more than to get out of that crowded room. I didn’t really understand why I had to give up my time to do something for people that I didn’t know, or that didn’t know me. As some know, my older brother was already enlisted in the Army National Guard, and I made sure to show him how much I looked up to him, and how truly proud I was of him, but that was as far as my thankfulness went. A few months later, I made the choice to join the Army National Guard. After completing Basic Combat Training, I now realize the sacrifice these veterans have given. I left my family for a total of 74 days, but these veterans left theirs for years at a time. During my 74 days at Basic Training, I occasionally got my phone, or a letter from home. These veterans didn’t get any contact with their families for months at a time. As you sat in that gymnasium this Wednesday morning, I hope you remembered why you get the opportunity to do so. Without those fine men and women before you, you wouldn’t have the freedoms that you do today.

To honor the Veterans of Barton County, there was a ceremony held at Vet’s Park around all of the flag poles. As well as local Veterans, the Great Bend High School marching band made an played. The Great Bend High School foods program is made a breakfast for the veterans that attended the morning assembly. Before all of these events, Great Bend High School held the annual Veterans Day Assembly. Please remember to give thanks to those who have served or are currently serving the country you call home.
