Spotlight Staff: Secretaries (Part one)

Caitlin Schmitt, Wrtiter

If you have to leave school, get to school late, get called to the office, or hear your name over the intercom you most likely have to communicate with a secretary. Here at Great Bend High School we have four front office secretaries. There’s the receptionist, attendance secretary, the discipline secretary, Mr. Friess’ (Head principal) secretary, Activities secretary, and the financial secretary.

KATHY GOAD: This is the lady right in front of you as you walk in the office door. She’ll locate and call your student down to the office, send your student a message to class, and/or direct you wherever you need to go. (Opinion: She’s a very nice lady, but doesn’t have time for liars!) “My job is to follow through orders I’m given and to enforce decisions made by the administration. I like to think I do so positively. I believe everyone wants to feel appreciated for their actions, but I don’t need recognition.” Her funniest office story is when a student came in late and his excuse was that he got attacked by a unicorn and had sparkles left all over him.

RHONDA: This is the lady to talk to about anything attendance. If you call your student out she gets a note to make sure they’re excused, she keeps track of tardies and absences. She’s very rarely available therefore she couldn’t fit me in for an interview.

PAULA: This is the lady you talk to if your student is in trouble. She handles detentions, referrals, tracking down kids who’re skipping, and sends the trouble makers to ISS. “I coordinate the discipline area, I do so to make sure our faculty, staff and students parents know that the students are safe and taken care of.” Paula’s funniest office story is when a student brought her ‘mom’ into the office to pick up her phone, when her real mother was on hold on the phone.
