The Last Jedi’s story involves a desperate struggle between the rebel Resistance fighters and the evil First Order, who are trying to wipe out the Resistance fleet with their star destroyers. In a futile retaliation, the Resistance takes out one of the First Order’s dreadnoughts, at the expense of all but one bomber.

After the brief victory, the ragged Resistance crew jumps to hyperspace, not realizing that the First Order can track them through hyperspace. Low on fuel, and vulnerable to First Order attack, the fleet uses what little fuel remains to stay just out of range of First Order bombardment.

Meanwhile, Finn, a defected storm trooper, secretly leaves the ship with the mechanic, Rose, to embark on a mission to disable the tracker on the First Order dreadnought before it catches up with the Resistance and destroys them.

Finn and Rose find a hacker who can get through the tracking device, and after sneaking aboard the First Order ship, the hacker betrays them revealing that he is a mercenary working for the First Order. They are taken into custody, along with the droid BB-8. The Resistance fighters are piled onto escape pods and sent to the nearest rebel base, while the nearly empty ship is sent into hyperspace while pointed at the First Order dreadnought, destroying it and giving a chance to the rebel fighters to make it to the rebel base.

On the other side of the galaxy, Rey, the Jedi-in-training goes to the planet where Luke Skywalker has gone into exile, along with Chewbacca in the Millenium Falcon, where she starts training with the Jedi master. While there, Luke sees a frightening amount of power in Rey, and is pessimistic and hesitant to teach her the ways of the force.

Rey and Chewbacca come back to the rebel base, where the First Order sends an onslaught on the base. During a showdown between Rey and Kylo Ren, the antagonist, Kylo defects against Supreme Leader Snoke and kills him with the lightsaber he confiscated from Rey. Rey and Kylo then duel the Guards and take them all down.

Rey and Kylo try to sway one another to the light and dark side of the Force before struggling to regain Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber; breaking it in two in the process. The two then rejoin their factions, where the final battle takes place at the rebel base, and Luke Skywalker creates a hologram of himself to face off with Kylo Ren.

The Resistance escapes the First Order and sends out a distress signal to other Resistance fighters across the galaxy, drawing the film to a close.
