Labor Day

Bayle Sandy, Reporter

Since 1894, Labor Day has been recognized as a federal holiday and has been celebrated on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement back in the late 19th century as a peaceful way to protest for better working conditions. Today, we have this time off to honor the contributions and productivity of American workers.

In Hoisington, the Labor Day celebrations will begin on Friday through Monday with a carnival, demolition derby, and of course their 123rd Annual Labor Day Parade. The parade is referred to as one of the largest in Kansas and will start at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

In order to celebrate this holiday, the Great Bend High School will have no classes on Monday, Sept. 2. Classes will resume on Sept. 3.
