Winter Sports Kickoff

Laura Daniel, Reporter

Waking up at 5 a.m. and going to basketball practice is a normal Friday morning routine for Great Bend High School basketball players. They work hard in the weight room and in practice to do the sport they love. Basketball isn’t the only sport with this level of dedication, however: athletes around the school have to practice either before or after school.

Opportunities await for the athletes at GBHS. There are boys and girls wrestling, basketball, and bowling, as well as cheer, dance line, and boys swim. Tryouts aren’t necessary for wrestling, bowling, or boys swim. Cheer and dance line have tryouts the year before, while basketball has a week of tryouts at the beginning of the season. The first pep assembly is December 5. The first basketball games are the Hays City Shootout from December 5 to December 7. The first swim meet is December 10 in Great Bend. On December 12, the wrestling has their first dual meet with Dodge City. This is the first year the cheer team and dance line will be going to a competition, which is on February 15.  Homecoming will be on Valentine’s Day, February 14, where the basketball team will play against Garden City.

Athletes work hard to do their best in games, and by attending those games, parents, students, and faculty members can give Panther athletes the support they need. Wear red and black to fill the stands and cheer on the Great Bend Panthers this winter season!
