Fall and Winter 2020: Are You Ready?
October 9, 2020
September 22nd was the first day of fall this year, which marks the start of new seasons and opportunity. Not only is it a change in this extensive year, but it means that the year is slowly coming to an end. According to an article from Bustle Magazine written by By JR Thorpe and Kaitlyn Wylde, ” To combat the anxiety and sadness that the coronavirus pandemic has created, people are looking to the fall and winter as a way to anchor themselves to feelings associated with comfort, belonging, and safety.”
We have been through a very chaotic year. A pandemic, election, national riots, and so much more. I think we can all agree that we’re ready for a fresh start. Fall and winter comes with family tradition, a change in weather, and signs that the year is almost over. If you aren’t a fan of cold weather, this coming fall and winter is for you. According to https://www.almanac.com/, “Winter will be milder than normal, on average, with above-normal precipitation and near- or below-normal snowfall. The coldest periods will be in early to mid-January, late January, and early February.”
On the gloomier side of things, winter is a time for seasonal depression for many people. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, affects nearly 10 million Americans yearly. SAD is caused by a mixture of lack of sunlight, frigid temperatures, and not being able to get outside. People that experience SAD often have difficulty sleeping, feel a sense of hopelessness, and even show signs of depression.
Whether you are experiencing excitement or dread for the upcoming chilly months, 2020 is coming to a close; finally. Even though some traditions may be put on hold, let’s make the most out of fall and winter. Put on your hats and coats and spread some love and cheer!
