The Importance of Positivity

Mollie Phillips, Reporter

Positivity is a word that is thrown around a lot in today’s day and age. You hear “stay positive” or similar statements on social media, your community, or even your school, but what is the true meaning of positivity?

We can start with the effects of negativity. Negativity begins with cynicism, catastrophizing, hostility, and other things. Bad thoughts that you don’t try to control are likely to fester in your brain, thus leading to repetitive negative thoughts. According to an article from Marque Medical, “Doctors have found that people with high levels of negativity are more likely to suffer from degenerative brain diseases, cardiovascular problems, digestive issues, and recover from sickness much slower than those with a positive mindset.”

Some bad thoughts are not wrong. Even the happiest people on the planet wake up on the wrong side of the bed sometimes. Not to say that you should completely ignore bad thoughts, but instead you should try to pinpoint that bad thought. Connect it to what it is associated with, what you’re feeling, and other things you are experiencing. Ignoring hard situations is not the answer to positivity.

On the other side of the spectrum we have positivity. It makes the brain produce serotonin which gives you a sense of happiness or well being. So how do you start to have a positive outlet in your life? According to an article from Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head.” If you think positively, you are more likely to be positive. If you think negatively, you will most likely be negative. Sort of like the saying “garbage in, garbage out.” Practicing constructive self-talk will create that positive spark in your brain.

Positivity is contagious. Spreading it can start a chain reaction of good deeds, paying things forward, or even just spreading smiles. Start thinking positive thoughts today, have a great mindset and life tomorrow.
