Managing & Reducing Stress
April 29, 2021
Stress is something that most people deal with. Whether it be in huge or small loads, it is something that is still present in our lives. Some stress is good since it can be a motivator for tasks, but too much can lead to things like accidents or injuries. Especially in the workplace, you want to have a healthy balance of stress in your life. According to an article by the Kansas Association of School Boards Workers Compensation Fund, there are a few methods you can try to lessen or sever ties with stress.
- Accept it- Some things are out of your control and all you can do is accept them and learn from them. Seek helpful advice or support from friends or coworkers.
- Avoid it – Stay away from recurring situations or sources of constant frustration. Remove yourself from the situation or rearrange your surroundings. For time related stress, plan ahead.
- Alter it- Communicate your feelings to your employer or supervisor. Change your feelings or ask someone else to change their behavior. Ask for help with your job or take advantage of your school district’s Employee Assistance Program.
- Adapt to it- Learn to cope with the situation or look at it as an opportunity. Focus on the positive things in your life. Try to make time for the activities you enjoy. Maintain a healthy lifestyle including exercise, meditation, and a balanced diet.
GBHS counselor Kayla Meadows says some great ways to reduce stress are to do things you enjoy, work out, read a book, or listen to music. If you have used any of these methods, you have probably noticed a big difference in the quality of your day. These four A words are great to remember in stressful situations, and can help you either deal with or remove yourself from them. Next time you are in a situation that presents you with repeated frustrating or stressful feelings, remember these methods!
