Fun Facts about Thanksgiving
November 30, 2021
If you were looking for fun facts about Thanksgiving, then you have come to the right place. Here are four facts about the holiday.
“My favorite thing about Thanksgiving is the dessert.” said Brenda Rodriguez.
The first fact about Thanksgiving is that Americans eat approximately 704 million pounds of turkey every Thanksgiving. Which is a lot of turkey. On average, an adult turkey weighs 11-24 lbs. If everyone had an 11-lb turkey, then that would be 64 million turkeys. Whereas if everyone had a 24-lb turkey, that would be 29,333,333 million turkeys.
The second facts is Jingle Bells was originally written to be a Thanksgiving song. The ditty was originally titled “One Horse Open Sleigh” in 1857. It was written by James Lord Pierpont who composed the song for his Thanksgiving Sunday school class. This song was the first ever song to be broadcasted into space by two astronauts aboard Gemini 6.
The third fact is that Franklin D. Roosevelt once moved Thanksgiving up a week in the midst of the Great Depression because he wanted to allow more time for shopping before Christmas. After it was announced, Atlantic City’s mayor, C.D. White, made a public statement that the town would celebrate two Thanksgivings and the earlier one would be known as “Franksgiving”.
The fourth and final fact is that one Connecticut town delayed Thanksgiving because of a pumpkin pie shortage. The town of Colchester, Connecticut, wanted to put a hold on Thanksgiving because of a molasses shortage, which they primarily used to make pumpkin pie.
Brianda Rodriguez said, “My favorite dish at Thanksgiving is mashed potatoes because you can never go wrong with mashed potatoes.”
That concludes my fun facts about Thanksgiving. I hope you all learned something new today.
