We’ve Got Spirit, Yes We Do….Do We?
September 28, 2015
What is school spirit? School spirit is showing devotion for one’s school. One can show it in many ways, whether it is going to games or just wearing a GBHS t-shirt. However, some teachers have noticed that in recent years the spirit has been declining. “I think people just don’t have the pride that is necessary in their work or their personal life and it carries over into a lack of pride for school, community, country, etc. Hopefully, this will change soon,” said Mrs. Eyestone.
Measures have been taken to boost spirit, however. In advisory, students learned the words to the school’s fight song and Alma Mater. Cheerleaders are trying to pep up the rest of the student body as well. Senior cheerleader Kori Birzer said, “We always participate in every spirit day during homecoming week. Also, at games and pep assemblies, we try hard to get everyone pumped up.” As homecoming approaches, spirit week will get the school ready to cheer on the football team as they take on the Dodge City Red Demons. Be sure to check out the flyers posted around school to see what the days are.
Some teachers believe that school spirit is on the rise, however. Mrs. Batman said, “I think we are getting more pride in school, where the kids are proud to be a Great Bend Panther and with Community Service Day, we are getting a reflection of what it is like to be proud of our community as well.”
