Sweeping the Mat with Wrestling

The end of fall sports is closing in. The first day of the winter season will switch the athletic spotlight over to winter sports, one of which will be wrestling.

The first day of wrestling practice will be November 18 in the wrestling room inside the PAC (Panther Athletic Center). There has been open mat going on since September 10 for aspiring and experienced wrestlers that want to get back in shape. Most wrestlers have to cut or gain weight to fit into their desired weight class. The beginning of the season starts with learning the basic rules and moves of wrestling. By the end of the season, the team will be going to tournaments and duels. The Panther Wrestling Team is ranked eighth in the All-Class Ranking.

This year, the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) approved girls wrestling as a sport. That means there will be official tournaments and a state competition for the girls team. The practices for the girls wrestling team will be held at the same time and place as the boys team. The weight classes for girls are 101, 109, 116, 123, 130, 143, 155, 170, 191, and 235 lbs.
